What does calling a 1800 number cost?

Free for the caller from Australian landlines and mobiles; the account holder pays for the call. The seven-digit 180 xxxx numbers are the legacy freephone format and are charged the same way.

Risk assessment

Freephone numbers are magnets for impersonation: fake 'fraud hotlines', bogus tech support and refund scams all leave 1800 callback numbers because they look institutional. An inbound call showing a 1800 caller ID is itself unusual — these ranges exist to receive calls — so treat it as likely spoofed and verify independently.
