13 numbers (13 xx xx)

Six-digit local-rate smartnumbers held by banks, airlines, insurers and government — the shortest and most valuable business numbers in Australia.

What does calling a 13 number cost?

Charged like a local call from landlines regardless of where the business answers. Most mobile plans now include 13 calls in the plan allowance, but pre-paid and older plans can charge timed mobile rates — check your provider.

Risk assessment

The class itself is heavily regulated and held by large organisations, but that is exactly why scammers spoof 13 numbers as their caller ID to impersonate banks and government agencies. A legitimate organisation calling you will never object to you hanging up and calling back the 13 number printed on its website or your card.

Who holds 13 numbers?

The ACMA register currently lists 228,875 allocations in this family with a combined capacity of about 242,023 numbers, spread across 11 holders. The largest holder is PRIMUS TELECOMMUNICATIONS PTY LIMITED with 26.2% of allocations. The register names the holder of record; the service you reach when you dial is usually a customer of that provider.
